Domains: How to Connect an Existing Domain (Automated Setup)

Created by Faye BSG, Modified on Mon, 15 Apr 2024 at 02:48 PM by Education Team

This article will cover how to connect an existing domain to your ClickFunnels 2.0 account using the automated setup process. For the automated method to work, your domain registrar must be supported. You can check if your Domain registrar is supported here.

ClickFunnels 2.0 requires the use of a subdomain, e.g., www. You will also be given the option to have your root domain, which is your domain without any subdomain (e.g., example.com), redirected to your chosen subdomain. If you are already using your root domain with another site (e.g. WordPress), and wish to keep it that way, then you must disable the option to redirect during this process.

Requirements

  • A ClickFunnels account
  • An existing domain from a supported 3rd party registrar

Step-by-step Walkthrough

  1. Click on “Sites” from the main navigation menu on the left side of the page.
Clicking on the Sites main navigation option

  2. Click on “Domains” from the navigation submenu on the left side of the page.
Clicking on the Domains navigation submenu option

  3. Click on the “Connect existing domain” button.
Clicking on the Connect existing domain button

  4. Type in the full domain you want to use, including the subdomain, then click the “Continue” button. For example, www.example.com.

Be sure to include a subdomain at the beginning. The most common subdomain is www.

In the website www.example.com, www is the subdomain and example.com is the domain. Another example, blog.mysite.net, has blog as the subdomain and mysite.net as the domain.

  5. Once the domain registrar information populates, click the “Add Domain” button.

  6. Decide if you want to redirect your root domain (e.g., example.com) to your chosen subdomain (e.g., www.example.com). Doing so means visitors can also type in your root domain (e.g., example.com) to access your ClickFunnels site, Funnels, Courses, etc., without typing in the subdomain.

If you are using your root domain (e.g., example.com) somewhere else, you must disable the redirect by toggling it OFF. If not, it will ruin your root domain. For more information, read about using a domain with multiple websites.

    • Redirect ON (default): Leave the toggle ON to redirect the root domain (e.g., example.com) to the chosen subdomain (e.g., www.example.com). This will remove the root domain from any other site so it can be used with ClickFunnels instead!
      Optional redirect toggle enabled

    • Redirect OFF: Turn the toggle OFF to leave the root domain (e.g., example.com) alone and not redirect it to the chosen subdomain (e.g., www.example.com). Turn the toggle OFF if you already use your root domain with a different site.
      Optional redirect toggle disabled

  7. After you have decided whether or not to redirect your root domain, click on the “Start domain setup” button.
Clicking the start domain setup button

  8. A window will open, confirming that ClickFunnels will configure the domain. Click the “Continue” button to agree.
Clicking continue to configure with ClickFunnels

  9. A window confirming the domain’s registrar will appear. Click the “authorize” button to continue.
Clicking the authorize with domain registrar button

  10. The new DNS records to be added will be displayed. Click the “Authorize” button to continue.

  11. Click the “Done” button once the domain configuration has been confirmed.
Clicking the done button to confirm

  12. The domain will now show as connected to confirm a successful connection.

On some occasions, the domain status will show as “Securing…”. Please allow up to 48 hours for the securing process to finish.

  13. Congratulations! You now know how to connect an existing domain in ClickFunnels.

Troubleshooting

  • A domain registrar or DNS provider does not support TXT records longer than 255 characters.
    • ClickFunnels uses a 2048-bit DKIM TXT record, which is longer than some domain registrars will support. In this case, please use a different DNS provider, such as Cloudflare, to manage your domain’s DNS records. Please see Cloudflare’s documentation for more details.
