Domains - Using a Domain on Multiple Websites

Created by Faye BSG, Modified on Wed, 01 May 2024 at 10:25 AM by Education Team

This article will provide generic information about using a domain with multiple websites simultaneously. Doing so allows you to keep the same domain branding and doesn’t require purchasing a new domain for each site. This is accomplished using subdomains.

Requirements

  • A custom domain.
  • Access to the DNS records of the custom domain.

A domain name is a unique address that identifies a website on the internet. A specific domain name is used for a single website, but creating multiple subdomains on an existing domain is possible.

A subdomain is a domain name that is part of a larger domain. For example, if your domain is example.com, you could create subdomains like blog.example.com or store.example.com. Each subdomain can be used for a different website or service while technically being part of the main domain. The most common subdomain used for a brand’s main website is www, e.g., www.example.com.

To use a domain on multiple websites, you must create a unique subdomain for each website or service you use. This is usually done through your domain registrar or web hosting provider. Once you have created a subdomain, you can set up one website using the new subdomain as the domain name. Then, repeat the process, using a different subdomain for each website.

Please contact your domain registrar or web hosting provider for instructions or help manually creating a new subdomain.
